When cheap dental work ends up costing more

This guide covers travel, process and cost. It contains no clinical advice.

Treatment abroad is usually a good deal — the published numbers make that plain, and most people who go have a straightforward time. The failure mode is not the country, it is choosing on price alone. When an implant fails, you pay three times: the original treatment, the removal and any grafting to repair the site, and then the replacement. That sequence turns a £1,500 saving into a £3,000 loss, and it is entirely avoidable with five checks that cost nothing.

The arithmetic of doing it twice

About £1,798 of treatment against £8,400 as a UK starting point — a saving of several thousand pounds, and the reason this market exists. Now imagine one of the four fails at eighteen months. You pay for removal and grafting, you pay for a replacement, and if it has to be done at home you pay UK private rates for it. One failure out of four can consume most of the saving on all four.

That is not an argument against travelling. It is an argument for spending an afternoon on the clinic instead of an afternoon on price comparison — because the difference between a good clinic and a cheap one abroad is far larger than the difference between two countries.

What is actually behind a price far below the market

Ask specifically which implant system will be used, and write the brand down. In ten years you may need a component for it, and a system nobody outside one clinic uses is a problem you will not see coming for a decade.

The five checks that keep you on the right side

Every one of these is free, and a clinic that is used to international patients will answer all five in a single reply without being chased. That reply is the most useful thing you will obtain in this whole process — more useful than any review, any photograph and any price.

Do them, and the arithmetic at the top of this page works entirely in your favour. Skip them, and you are relying on luck for a purchase that costs thousands and lasts decades.

Frequently asked questions

Is cheap dental work abroad safe?

Price is not the risk factor — the clinic is. Mid-priced clinics abroad routinely produce excellent outcomes. What correlates with problems is a price far below the market, which usually means the quote covers less of the job than you think.

What happens if an implant placed abroad fails?

The bill lands with you, and it covers three stages: taking the implant out, repairing the site, and placing a new one. Agree the warranty terms in writing before you travel, including who pays for a return trip.

How much below the market is a warning sign?

There is no exact number, but treat anything around half the going rate as a question rather than a bargain. Ask what is excluded, and compare complete totals rather than headline prices.

Does this mean I should not go abroad?

No. It means choose the clinic properly rather than choosing the cheapest. Done that way, the saving on multi-tooth treatment is large and reliable.

How to verify a dental clinic abroad

Cheapest is a bad filter. Let us apply a better one

Send us the clinic or the quote you are looking at. We will run the five checks on this page and tell you what we find — including when what we find is nothing, which is itself worth knowing before you book.

No medical details needed yet — we only ask about those once someone is actually looking at your case.

A person replies, within one working day.
