Travel insurance does not cover the treatment you flew out for

This guide covers travel, process and cost. It contains no clinical advice.

A standard travel insurance policy covers unexpected illness and accidents while you are abroad. It does not cover treatment you travelled specifically to receive, and it does not cover fixing that treatment if it fails. This is precisely the gap insurers exclude and the health service does not fill: neither a standard travel policy nor the NHS is designed to catch elective work that needs redoing.

What a standard policy does and does not do

Do not rely on a summary — including this table. Search your policy document for the words "medical tourism", "elective" and "planned treatment", and read those paragraphs before you travel.

What to arrange instead

Because insurance will not carry the risk of the treatment itself, that risk has to be carried by the agreement you make with the clinic. This is the part patients skip, and it is the part that decides what happens in the bad case.

Frequently asked questions

Will my travel insurance cover dental work I booked abroad?

No. Standard policies exclude treatment you travelled to receive. They cover emergencies unrelated to your planned treatment.

Will it cover complications from that treatment?

Usually not. The exclusion generally extends to consequences of the planned procedure, which is precisely the cover people assume they have.

Will the NHS fix problems when I get home?

UK guidance warns that follow-up care may not be easily available and may not be covered. Do not plan on the NHS as your safety net.

Is specialist medical-travel insurance worth it?

It can be, but read the conditions closely — some require the clinic to hold specific accreditation, and some exclude the same complications you were buying cover for.

The guarantee and aftercare terms are the cover you actually have. Here is how to test them before you pay.
